I Am God

                AM GOD….GOT IT?  John 6

INTRODUCTION:  Sometimes life is hectic…frantic…hard.  We scramble from one thing to another with little awareness, and we get tired and our emotions come to the surface.  Sometimes we are hard to get along with.  In the midst of it all…worries.  You have come to worship…and you have a vague sense of life shouldn’t be this way.  We wish our lives could be smooth sailing…But instead we have storms, frantic, hard struggling lives.

  1.  Here Jesus say I AM!  This passage is climatic in John.  Let’s take a look at the setting.

-Jesus fed the multitudes with loaves and fishes.  The people said, He is a prophet…He is the Messiah, lets make Him King.  Jesus is in the midst of the conflict…so He sends the 12 away, across the lake and He goes off to a lonely place to pray.  He didn’t want the disciples in the midst of that conflict…maybe He was already thinking of Judas.

-The disciples are rowing across the lake…and a storm arises.  Notice…Jesus sent the disciples into the storm.  Jesus is walking on the waters, they see a figure walking on the waters and they are terrified.

-Jesus…Don’t be afraid…I AM!  IT IS I!  I am God.

-John weaves the miracle of the bread and the miracle of the water together…cool.  John last of 4 gospels…Christology is higher…Why?  I am comment…Jesus says the same thing in Mark by the way.  Reflections on what I am means:  bread-abundance, light-direction and morality, gate-how to make it to the Father and protection, good shepherd-security…and hearing His voice, way-truth-life, resurrection and life, vine-abiding in me.  John showing us what the I am saying means.

-the miracle stories then the I am stories woven next to one another.

2.  WHAT IS THE WORD TRYING TO TELL US?  I AM-WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO US?

A.  Real life will still have struggles,

Jesus and struggles, disciples and struggles, us and struggles.  Jesus sent disciples into the storm-image of boat, Church

B.  How to respond to life’s struggles:

-keep on rowing, remain confident and secure, listen to Jesus, go row a boat.  Do the things you know you should do.  Don’t neglect to do the things you should do.  Sometimes I hear people say I don’t know what I should do…seek God, love God…day by day-keep on rowing.

-choose faith…in the midst of the storms…easy to see the ghosts, instead look for the presence of Christ.

-invite Jesus into the boat…suddenly they were ashore…Jesus will get us ashore.

-I AM…get that issue settled.

I AM…learn what that means…the last I Am teaching…I am the vine, you are the branches…abide in me.  Learn to be a person of prayer, in the midst of the frantic hectic hard moments…

Conversational prayer,  intentional prayer, journaling prayer, meditative prayer, listening prayer…PRAY.

CONCLUSION:  I AM…GOT IT?  ACCEPT HIM…GO ON THE ADVENTURE OF FAITH IN HIM.
